This 4 day / 3 night tour starts and ends in Skopje, Macedonia and includes a full day tour of Skopje and a full day tour outside Skopje including a boat trip along the Matka canyon and visiting the 3 monasteries there, Matka Monastery, St. Andrew Monastery and St. Nikola Monastery.
Welcome to Skopje! Upon your arrival, you will be welcomed and transferred to your hotel. The remainder of your day is free to explore.
After breakfast, your guide will meet you in the hotel lobby.
After a short drive our first stop is, Sarena Dzamija meaning Decorated Mosque, in Tetovo. The mosque was originally built in 1438 and financed by two local sisters. More than 30,000 eggs were used to prepare the paint and glaze used in the elaborate decorations.
From here we head to Ohrid, known as the "Jerusalem" of the Balkans, on the shores of Lake Ohrid. Ohrid is notable for once having 365 churches, one for each day of the year. Ohrid and Lake Ohrid are UNESCO Cultural and Heritage sites. After a walking tour of Ohrid, we will visit one the most popular Monasteries, the Monastery of Saint Naum, established in 905 by Saint Naum himself. Macedonians believe you can still hear the saint's heartbeat by pressing an ear to his stone coffin inside the church. After this visit we will return to Skopje.
The tour starts with a visit to the Monastery of Matka dedicated to the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God. The monastery is located on the left bank of the River Treska and was built around 1337. Then we continue to walk along the bank of the River Treska and follow the path that goes by the dam and the man-made Lake Matka and we reach the Monastery of St. Andrew. Then we will take a boat ride on the canyon Matka (8km long) and we enjoy the magnificent surroundings, the scents of the flora and the songs of the numerous birds that live here. On our return, we stop on the other side of the lake, just opposite the Monastery of St Andrew, and we start climbing up the path on a forested hill that leads up to the Monastery of St. Nikola at the top. Afterwards we go down the hill, cross the lake by boat and end our tour of Matka.
After breakfast, a gentle walking tour of the center, visit Kale Fortress, the Church of the Holy Savior with its iconostas, one of the finest samples of traditional walnut woodcarving, Old Bazaar and Stone Bridge. Our tour concludes with outbound airport transfer.
